Summary
The tradition started the year after the battle for the Spire.
A year had passed since Nil stole Avad’s heart and ran with it west. The whirlwind but short-lived secret romance between the Sun-King and the elusive hunter that was doomed from the start only lasted a couple of passionate nights during the festivities of the winter solstice, yet it had been enough to keep a hold on Avad’s thoughts throughout the months to follow even in the other man’s painful absence.
By now a year had passed with no news, no message, not even so much of a rumor of Nil’s whereabouts. He had disappeared out of Avad’s life in a flash, just as abrupt and unpredictable as he had entered it. Nevertheless the hunter had promised to return on the next holidays and it was this promise that made the Sun-King hope against the odds over the past months until the long awaited next winter solstice finally arrived at his doorstep.- Language:

Despite having been taught every proper rite and prayer of the Sun’s will by Sun-Priests since an early age as it was custom for children of the noble houses in the Sundom, even those born under a long shadow, Nil has never considered himself a man prone to faith. He’s never given much for ranks or worship, even while enlisted as a soldier, and he never believed in many of the religious superstitions and doctrines that his former tribesmen so eagerly lapped up like beaten dogs with drooling tongues. He certainly never believed in the praised divine of the Sun-King…
That was until he saw the smile of Avad’s, 14th Luminance of the Radiant Line, and for the first time in his life, he felt like falling to his knees in awe.

Taking a deep breath, he swung his body over the banister, which wasn’t an easy feat with the long dress he was wearing, and jumped. He just missed the abyss by a hair’s breadth and managed to land on the second balcony rather unceremoniously, but lost his sword in the process, the blade slipping from his belt and falling to the ground deep below. Slipping through the balcony door standing ajar, Avad instantly froze upon realizing he didn’t enter another empty room, but instead he came face to face with a pair of pale blue eyes staring right back at him.
An unknown man, about his age, with short black, hair that looked a bit tousled but well-groomed, and with the same soigne style of beard gracing his own face as well, stood in the middle of the small chamber he just entered, barefoot and bare chested, about to fasten his pants - or unfasten them, Avad wasn’t entirely sure. The markings of a hunter were tattooed beneath the man’s striking eyes...
While hiding from Kestrels disguised as a Carja noblewoman, Avad runs into Nil at a brothel. -

After HADES conquered Meridian, Nil found himself escaping the destruction with an unusual noble he found in the burning rubble. A journey through the desert with the king of the Sundom has brought about an unexpected budding relationship in the midst of the slow destruction of the entire world at HADES's hands.
Now Nil and Avad have rejoined the remaining refugees of the city, growing in number day by day to huddle in tunnels of ancient ruins, waiting for their king to save them from the Twilight as foretold by scripture itself.
Nil must find his new place in a world falling apart, threatened by the creeping power of HADES that wishes to consume them all. He walks his days haunted by memories and the very Voice of our Teeth that will do anything to keep him from embracing a new future unbound by the past.

This fic is a continuation of the equally unfinished "The Ballad of Aloy and Nil" and adds Avad to the mix. Though it references the other work, it can be read as a standalone.

There will be at least one short passage of consensual underage sex between teenaged Nil and Avad (being 13 and 15) who happen to be cousins in my imagination. Aloy and Avad, joined by the Hunter Nil, must travel far from the borders of the Sundom and deep into the mysterious Forbidden West, where answers to some of Aloy's remaining questions may be waiting.
