Summary
Chief Inspector Thursday had noticed that in the absence of young Constable Morse, work at City Police had been resorted to a glacial snail’s pace. As a result he afforded Jakes the evening off to try and convince Morse to rejoin the force by any means necessary. Anticipating attending one of Joss Bixby’s lavish masquerade balls, Sergeant Jakes finds himself getting swept along, and the evening ends with more than what he bargained for.

Summary
“What would you like?”
“Time,” Morse said. He stroked Bixby’s face, feeling the pleasure of that warm skin and smooth hair against his fingers. He too could map him. Figure out his body, the noises he made, if nothing else. Could make a study of why he felt so drawn to this man.
“We’ve plenty of it.”
Bixby let go of him and Morse felt the cold air against his now bare skin. He unbuttoned his shirt slowly, smiling as he met Morse’s eyes.
“Tell me more, old man. What do you want?”
“You.” -

Summary
Morse can remember dying, despite all attempts to the contrary, despite being saved, too. Somewhere still in East Berlin his blood soaks the dark soil. Saved by the one person in all of Berlin he could ever trust, the one person Morse would never really know despite their years together - an American agent. The deceit of the job is one he's learned to accept, but the guilt of allowing the lie of his death to persist is something he’s less comfortable with. It's not a lie he expects to rectify, certainly not at a glutenous party in Oxford. He comes out of the light with a smile on his lips, as though the rug hasn’t been pulled out from under him: the American.
Morse had known him as Rolf, but now he’s made a new name for himself: Joss Bixby.
If you loved someone, lost them, and had the chance to make it right… Wouldn’t you at least try?
A Spy AU wherein Morse and Bixby met in Berlin, and lost each other there too, only to reconnect in Oxford of all places. Inspired by “Ask Me No More,” by AstridContraMundum.

Summary
When Morse is released from prison he abandons his job, his friends, his home to move to an old cabin in the woods. Running with his wealthier friends from his time in Oxford and frequenting Bixby's lavish parties, trying to emerse himself in his new decadant lifestyle. After a few failed attempts to bring Morse back to the police force, the flag is passed to a rather jealous Detective Sergeant who seeks out Morse to make his feelings known.

Summary
Thursday was not prepared for it—for the sight of Morse in an evening suit, a glass of Scotch in his hand, leaning in so as to hear over the music, hanging on Harry Rose’s every word.
So close. So close that the old man might reach up and light his cigarette. Or even trace his calloused fingers down to the base of that elegant throat.

Summary
"Morse,” Thursday said.
It was a reprimand, yes, but so gentle, his voice so full of that low and brooding warmth, that it felt as if he had reached out with one rough hand and stroked his face.

Summary
The shooting made some emotional truths clear to Fred, and to Morse, and now they've got to deal with them in the restrictive framework of their lives. Fred is wrestling with the specter of his own mortality, and the realization that his simply, happy home isn't as settled as he though. Meanwhile, Morse is struggling to regain traction in his life after his faith in the job was shaken, and coming face to face with the realization that his instincts as a compulsive investigator -- and his attachment to his married DCI -- might be at odds with the moral high ground.
This is a Morse/Thursday story, please note the lack of the platonic-familial "&" in the tags and read advisedly. S3 & S4 AU, post Neverland.
"He saw that they were both made that way, greedy for it... Neither could see the specter of it somewhere in their world, along their personal horizon and then turn away from it. Could not walk on from it, even if that would be the wisest, or the kindest course..."

Summary
Morse is in the country, it's not all bad.
As that first cruel winter fades away into a clear spring swiftly bleeding to a vibrant, aching summer, Morse feels very lonely. He probably sees more people than he ever did in the city, his rural beat takes him through rich pastures and hamlets humming with that rural collectivity, farmers and postmen who wave at his small blue car, people calling out for help with a cat up a tree or a lost shilling. He thinks it’s that – being the man on the outside in his uniform and uniform car with his uniform responses – that makes him feel like the only man in the world.

Summary
Peter Jakes can hear opera music which means one of two things: he has just moved into the flat next to a serial murderer or he has just moved into the flat next to Morse. (He's not sure which would be worse.)
You can always tell when a case is going to be a big one just by the way Morse reads the incident report, something in the way his head cocks to the side like something isn’t quite right and before you know it there’s three more murders, two accomplices, no witnesses, and several instances of police corruption. In the wide and varied opinions and experiences of Peter Jakes, the look on Morse’s face now – mouth wrinkles deepening to icy crevasses, eyes hard and thoughtful, pen stopped clicking – this is a Morse case.
Peter can pick it up too. Four bodies, a note, DeBryn heading to the scene now – It’s a big one. It thrums in the dust dancing in the sunbeams through the window, smudges up against Morse’s ink stained hands, rattles the blinds, fumbles in the silent choke of his cigarette smoke swirling dizzily up to the ceiling. It’s a big one.

Summary
It's still dark when Morse jumps into the lake after Bixby is shot, and full light by the time the police arrive on the scene, during which time Max has already started his work on the body. What happened in that time between, and what did the conversation with Max look like, that Morse is convinced to return to the police by the time Thursday and Jakes interview him?

It had been years since Morse had last looked at the old reel of film, but sometimes, when he closed his eyes, he could still see it—that glimmer of light, as the frames rolled on, one by one.
