Summary
It started with the conversation about New York.
Not the sex, exactly—that wasn't till after. It wasn't like they were talking about New York while they did it.
But in retrospect, that was why it happened the way it did—for both of them, even though Dani hadn't known it, couldn't have guessed it, at the time.

Summary
"Knock it off," he said softly as he saw that Dani really was asleep, not messing with Cole for pretending to talk in his sleep and saying Dani had been about to blow him to get the name of the boat.

Summary
Anyway, the point is, the money's not the problem. Guns aren't the problem. Keeping busy isn't the problem, and Karl Servigo's not the problem. They aren't dodging anybody out of Puerto Vallarta, either—all the evidence that was left out on the ocean from that night suggests that everybody involved shot each other or got blown up along with the yacht. So the cops aren't a problem, and whatever buddies of Loomis's might be left out there, they don't know any more about any of it than the cops do.
The problem is that Cole can't—Cole can't figure out how to talk to Dani about it.

Summary
Cole was being stupid, and he knew it.
He'd known it the moment he'd gotten on the plane. Hell, he'd known it earlier than that—when he'd bought the ticket, that had been the real kicker. That had been the moment it had turned from a stupid idea he'd had, which was nothing new, to a stupid thing he was doing for real.
But it wasn't like he could turn the plane around now. And maybe this was exactly what he needed to get his head on straight, to teach himself a lesson that was going to sink in at last: that whatever the fuck was wrong with him, there was no way he could expect Dani to fix it, not anymore.

Summary
It was fine. They were doing good. He wasn't going to ruin it by deluding himself. They had a balance going, but it was delicate: he pretended like they were still going to leave, and Dani pretended to believe it. Poking holes in that, trying to make it real when it wasn't—that was just going to fuck it all up.
And then Dani got taken.

The giddy relief carried them along just fine for the first hour or two coming out of Puerto Vallarta.
