    Summary

One year since Bastogne. One year since Alice lost half of everyone she'd come to care about in Easy. One year since she'd battled against pneumonia as much as she'd battled against the Germans. Only now, she was home.

No foxholes, no artillery barrages, no tree bursts. Just Alice and Nix and the mansion they'd been given by his mother. But they're both getting restless. Harry and Kitty's wedding is on the horizon, and with that, an excuse to travel.

But even with no foxholes, no artillery barrages, and no tree bursts keeping them up at night, they hadn't come home unscathed. No one had. Everyone who went to war was a victim.

    Summary

War never changes, but who you fight alongside does.

In 1942, Alice Klein left the French Maquis to assist America's paratrooper corps. She lost everything to the Nazis when she left: her family, her country, and her friends. But she gained Easy Company.

Alice and the rest of Easy Company have been through six long months of combat already. They've seen friends die. But they're about to enter the toughest months yet. December in Bastogne brings trench foot, artillery barrages, and snipers. It brings frostbite and stupid mistakes. And above all, D-Day + 193 brings death.

As the war drags on, Alice must face hard truths about what it means to be a German Jew. Events from 1942 come to light which force her to rethink everything she knew about her family's fate. As it turned out, Germans were the first victims of the Nazi party.

Thankfully, Alice doesn't have to face it alone. While some faces disappear forever, others become closer than she could have ever imagined. Because though war never changes, who you fight it with does.

    Summary

Being in the French Resistance wasn't what Alice Klein envisioned her life looking like. She'd wanted a husband and a flat in Paris, and maybe a cat with a pink bow who would sleep on her piano. But bullets didn't discriminate between male or female, young or old. Alice knew that better than most. As a half-German, half-French Jew, it seemed no matter where she went, she was hated. To the German army or Vichy France, she was a traitor. To any uneducated Allied soldier, her last name screamed Nazi.

When the Maquis heard of the Allies looking for connections to the French Resistance, they'd quickly offered up Alice as a translator and liaison. Whisked away from the French Alps, she arrived in the States to train as a paratrooper, knowing that failure was not an option no matter how much she disliked it.

Lucky for her, she didn’t just find barracks and training grounds in America. She found men, and in them, family to replace the one she’d lost.

    Summary

Ad Astra Per Aspera is the sequel to The Soldier of Stars.

Waking up disoriented and inside a hospital, that has the dingy army issued light bulbs, the rough cots and the smell of despair is not how Hazel thought her new year would start, especially with the pulsing wound that lies in her side. Hazel Parker, severely injured and mentally unstable, lies in wait at a field hospital, as Easy Company continues to battle the tortures of the war.

Catherine McCown, Elizabeth Elliot and Easy Company, are struggling, especially after the major losses of Bill Guanere and Joe Toye or others like Donald Hoobler and especially Skip Muck and Alex Penkala and most importantly, the tiny sniper Hazel Parker. Each loss pushed Easy into a darker time, a darker reality that they would ultimately have to face if they were to make the attack on Foy.

Through the ups and downs of the ending of the war Ad Astra Per Aspera follows Easy's ending to the war as well as Hazel's undying story of love and war, as well as the thoughts of the stars and the will to keep fighting even if you're hurting.
