Brian pulled back just enough to look him in the eye, brow furrowed. “Yeah, well—try to avoid the decisions that make me want to murder people.”
Justin snorted.
“I’m serious. Nobody gets to have you like that, Justin. No one.”
Justin’s smile faded into something smaller. Something more real. He stared at Brian for a long moment, eyes scanning over his face—those sharp cheekbones, that worried line between his brows, the softness that kept trying to hide.
Then he shrugged, slowly.
Brian narrowed his eyes. “What?”
Justin hesitated, biting the inside of his cheek. “Nothing.”
Brian pulled back an inch more. “No, what was that look? That thought just now?”
Justin flushed. His voice was small. “I just—” he cleared his throat. “I'd probably still adore you with your hands around my neck.”
Brian’s eyes went wide.

“A business internship,” Craig repeated. “At Ryder Advertising?”
“Yes,” Justin said, lifting his glass of water to his lips, as if it could shield him. “It’s part of the honors program. Just four months. I’d be shadowing someone in the director's office.”
“That’s an ad agency,” Craig said flatly.
“It’s still business,” Justin replied, his voice cool and practiced. “Just in a real-world setting. You said you wanted me to get experience. This is experience.”
Craig’s brow furrowed. “Advertising isn’t business. It’s a circus. Smoke and mirrors. And what does any of that have to do with what we’re paying for at St. John's ?”
“I’ll still graduate with top honors,” Justin said. “I’m not dropping anything. I’m just adding something... different.”
He didn’t say the rest: that this internship wasn’t about pleasing his father, or padding his Ivy League applications. It was about escaping. About stepping into something new. Something electric.
About finding something that was his—and only his.
