    Summary

Mira snorts—she knows they're just joking. "So, what game is this?" She gestures to the board in front of her.

"Ah-" Rumi puts the wrinkled manual on the table and slides it to Mira. "It's Monopoly…?"

Mira frowns while analyzing the setup. "So this is Monopoly…"

Rumi arches an eyebrow. "You never really played it before?"

"Not really, no. I've heard of it before, though."

"Monopoly's like—one of the biggest board games ever. A classic," Zoey comments. "You never played with your family before?"

Mira takes the metallic token in the shape of a race car to see it from up close. "Not really. My parents travel a lot, so quality time is pretty rare."

"Oh." Rumi lets scape, as both she and Zoey look at her, wide-eyed.

    OR

Zoey and Rumi are players, because they play board games. Mira is a player, because she plays with people's feelings.

    Summary

Rumi is standing on her toes, reaching out for a dumpling that Mira is holding above her head.

She can see the years of friendship — of knowing each other — in the way their bodies move around each other, in every look they share, in every push and pull of the air around them. It's beautiful, hypnotic.

But it's also fragile, something that could so easily break — that she could so easily break with how much she wants them.

With how much she wants to be pulled into their orbit and wrap that thread they share around herself too.

She raises her camera back up, eye on the viewfinder and follows the two of them as they move to another stall — Mira making a gesture with one hand that has Rumi throwing her head back in laugher.

The letter came sealed in red wax:
“Instructor assignment - Noble House Choi, Haneulseong.”

At first, she thought it a punishment. Swordsmen rarely trained nobles. It was tedious work, often meant for retired veterans or those too injured to serve.
But when she read the letter again, she saw the request bore the personal seal of the Choi patriarch.
    Mira almost refused.
    Almost.

    Summary

Sighing to herself, she pulled her sleeves down again. Rumi didn’t care what the job paid. She didn't care about the pictures of the counter that looked impossibly complicated or that the owner, Mira, had a review online that simply stated: ‘The owner stares into your soul until you confess your past sins.’ She desperately needed the job. She needed to escape. This was her chance at a new start. The risk was terrifying, but the small, bright possibility of a completely new start filled her with a nervous kind of giddiness.

Stepping inside The Quiet Hearth was like she’d entered a warm embrace, the air thick with the rich scent of coffee and a hint of cinnamon. Soft, golden light from low-hanging warm bulbs cast a gentle glow over the room, illuminating the deep tones of the exposed wooden beams across the low ceiling. A scattering of small, organised tables and chairs, and plush, well-loved armchairs created intimate nooks, perfect for quiet conversation.

Or, All Rumi wanted was a quiet job. What she got was a chaotic artist, a terrifyingly kind boss, and a café that became her new home.

    Summary

A month after the Idol Awards, Rumi is struck by a torturous nightmare that only gets worse when she wakes. She cannot resist the painful call in her mind that pulls her towards a mysterious location; giving in, though, leads to her body being warped and corrupted into a demon with a vile, insatiable hunger. She is forced to push through new pain and old fears in order to reclaim her life from the traumatic fate her parents left for her.

Without her real family - without Celine, who Rumi can't bring herself to hate; without Bobby, who looks out for them all; without Mira and Zoey, who love her and each other in ways they hardly understand - she would be lost. But together, they all stand a chance to heal from the wounds they've inherited.

    ---
Or: a post-canon story about generational trauma, inherited burdens, the power of found family, the difference between forgiveness and absolution, and the loss and reclamation of control. It's also about silly moments stolen out of the heart of hardship, intense fight scenes with heavy consequences, the author's relatively brief love affair with Shakespearean tragedy, and a slowburn romance deeply intertwined with the process of healing.
