When Lucanis blinked his eyes open he was met with a cloud of dark hair that obscured his vision. He breathed in the scent of sandalwood and citrus, and the faint undertone of ozone that sharply prickled the back of his nose. Rook’s familiar scent quickly eased his mind, and memories of last night rushed back to him. He brushed his arm behind him to seek out Emmrich, finding the other side of the bed empty, but still faintly warm. When Lucanis strained his senses, he could hear slight movement from the other room.
It hadn’t been a dream then.

Yeah, well. Maybe a Shadow Dragon has more than a few reasons to seem as boring as possible. Between the Venatori, the Elven Gods, and Solas there are enough eyes on Evariste Mercar to make a whole new kind of demon. What they would do if they knew the real Evariste...is something he never intends to find out. So, he keeps the team at arm's length.
How chasing some tight Antivan tail fits into that plan is anyone's guess. Evariste can't help himself. They leave each other notes, it's sweet, it feels real. There's a certain charm in pitching woo at a man who can't seem to catch it with both hands and a net.
But, Lucanis wants to know the real Evariste, too, and he's not looking away. If they keep going, they may both wish he had.

Adrenaline still coursing through him, Rook stares up at the sight of his boyfriend standing above him, eyes traveling up the length of Lucanis’ body, across his thigh-high boots and the belts and buckles of his tight leather armour.
Call him crazy, but honestly, Rook is a little turned on.

“I’m Divine Aequitas II, and someone just wrote a story about a man who is The Divine during the day and a vigilante hero at night. Sound familiar?”
He’s tongue-tied. A million thoughts run through his head at once, all arriving at Maker, I’ve been a bloody idiot. I let it go way too far.
“Listen, Tarquin. I— We think someone’s threatening me. It’s all too suspiciously close to reality. They’ve written about an organization called the Star Snakes, about a hero called The Scorpion. The names are changed, but that hardly matters when it gets so many details right. Dorian said there’s… There’s someone like you, too.”
OR: Because Tarquin is Tarquin, he gets himself in massive trouble by accidentally guessing what Ashur’s secret identity is, and writing a serial about it.
