“The proper term is ‘enthralled,’” Angel said, coming up behind Xander and leaning lightly against his back. Xander stiffened and kept his hand over his eyes to avoid further thralling.
“You’re not gonna make me eat bugs, are you?” he demanded.

Sure, that wasn't entirely accurate, as Dawn and Buffy come to mind, but aside from the two he loved dearly, no one else had really cared for him. The Scoobies were wary of outsiders, and if he was to admit to himself, he had been one from start to finish, no matter how he'd changed and tried to do good. So when he's revived from death due to the bloody amulet that had made his soul flare brighter than the sun, surrounded by strangers and his grandsire, he knew it would happen all over again.
They wouldn't want his company nor help, and quite frankly, he had no desire to try and mesh with the group.
