Summary
"Suguru Geto's dorm room needs to be cleaned out."
Satoru shrugged. "So clean it."
"Satoru," Yaga said sternly. Some kind of reprimand hung in the air between them, but it didn't come. Yaga had been very delicate about the situation since it happened, but Satoru was still a teenager and still had all the attitude that came with it.
"I don't know why you're bothering to tell me this."
Yaga breathed deeply. "Typically, when we lose students, for whatever reason." The unspoken reasons of quitting, defection, and death were heavily implied. "We either contact the family to retrieve their personal items, or we trash everything. Since Suguru doesn't have a family to contact…"
"I promise if you don't at least look, you're going to wish you did one day."
Suguru is gone, leaving Satoru to pick up the pieces he left behind.

Summary
They’re kind of in the thick of the shit when the truth of Wylan’s identity comes out. No one really asks any questions, just takes the information at face value and moves along.
One of Wylan’s first nights in the barrel, a street merchant had laughed at Wylan as he stopped to offer a girl with messy hair and dirt smeared across her face half of the loaf of bread he’d just purchased. As he’d stooped down to offer it to her and check her over for injuries, her twin brother had bustled behind him, looting the rest of the measly krudge from Wylan’s pocket. When he’d crossed the street to the merchant to buy some fruit the merchant had chuffed he didn't have any krudge to offer. Wylan frantically searched his pocket only to come up empty handed.
“You gotta assume the worst about everyone in the barrel kid. ‘Cause you gotta be at your worst to end up in the dirty barrel.” The merchant offered him a dropped and bruised apple and sent him to scurry off. The kids have taken the money he’d been carrying to pay for his boarding for the week.
Or, the five times the crows are mean to Wylan after finding out his true identity, and the one time they try to make it up to him.

Summary
Will's face grew hot, his vision blurring at the edges. Oh no. There was no quicker way for him to find himself Not Okay, than being asked directly when he was already on the edge. And yes, Kayla was right. He knew, objectively, that he needed to talk about these things and deal with these feelings, or at least come to terms with them. But right here, right now, in the employee locker room as he was supposed to start a twelve-hour shift of his already emotionally demanding job, was not the time. So he focused all of his willpower on holding in his tears and burying the emotions that had brought them to the surface. Once he was certain he wouldn't burst into sobs as soon as he opened his mouth, he croaked, "I'm fine."
~
Or, Will is fine. Seriously. Why does everyone keep asking?

Summary
“They’re everywhere,” says Kayla in disgust, peeling a long, curly strand off her shirt. “I haven’t been in the same room as him in two days. This is a brand-new shirt. How am I still somehow covered in his hair?”
“He’s like a dog,” Austin explains. Nico snorts. “He sheds, and at first it’s subtle, here and there, you get used to it. The suddenly two years go by and people are complimenting the fur coat that was not fur before you bought it.”
Gracie sticks out her bottom lip, eyes watering. “Will is not a dog, he’s a boy!”
Kayla, weak to her sister’s pouting, pokes her playfully in the side. “I’m only teasing, Gracie-girl. Of course Will isn’t a dog.”
“Except the shedding, and the constant yapping, and the fact that if you don’t let him loose to run around for a while he goes batty, and of course the following Nico around like a lovesick pup—”
“Thank you, Austin,” Nico interrupts, clearing his throat.
Austin snickers. “Anytime.”
