25-year-old Kaz Seraph hasn't exactly had it easy. Burdened with a genetic mutation that gives her the ability to conjure, create, and manipulate fire and heat - and, on occasion, even magma - that didn't take hold and reveal itself until her teens, Kaz quickly found herself slipping into a life of crime. Having already been a sneaky kid, prone to breaking and entering, petty theft, and general debauchery, her powers became a tool she used freely. However, as her criminal career progressed and as she graduated from petty crime to contract work, she found herself suddenly the target of several criminal societies seeking a powerful, reckless mutant to join their cause - something that eventually landed her in a secret, high-tech, high-security Department of Damage Control prison for dangerous mutants.
Having caught wind of the most recent addition to the prison, Nick Fury sought out to meet Kaz himself, quickly realizing that there was an opportunity to be had. This mutant's annoying sense of self-assuredness reminded him of someone else he'd known for quite some time - so he contacted Tony Stark with an opportunity to further strengthen the Avengers.
