He doesn’t think that going mad is the right way to describe it. Mad insinuates that they have, at some disastrous, unsupervised point in time, had enough sanity to endure the process of insanity. That they weren't all born bright—stupid and youthful and broken down sharply like Canopus wiling away, exploding into a cataclysmic supernova just before the age of thirteen. That they don't delight in destruction and relish In the sickening snap of bone—vertebrae and tailbone and the marrow inside of them.
Honestly, that's giving them too much credit, their existence isn't poetic in the slightest; it's damned. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The Seven Deadly Sins, although they only make up six, although they're imprisoned in an existential cycle of relentless survival. Of 'one more fight', and 'one more reason' and yet they're not even at legal voting age—much like the various other fateful choices held just above their hungry grasps.
Honestly, they're just teenagers. And that means absolutely everything.
