“Where are you buried, do you’ve any idea?”
“My body was never found,” he replies softly. “There is a memorial marker next to my parents’ graves, but my remains are not there.”
The idea is so horrifying that it stuns Charles into silence for a couple seconds. “I didn’t know that. Why didn’t I know that?”
Edwin’s shoulders tense. “The whole thing is bloody tragic enough as it is.”
Grabbing his wrist, Charles begins marching them back in the direction of the pond they used to get here.
Edwin doesn’t resist, but he does argue, because of course he does. “Charles, where are we going?”
“St. Hilarion’s. We’ve got a new case, don’t we?”

Summary
A witch places a leash spell on Charles, allowing whoever holds the leash to control his actions. Fortunately, Edwin reaches the leash before the witch, and they manage to escape. Edwin searches for a counterspell, but Charles is starting to think maybe this leash isn't so bad... As long as Edwin is on the other end.

Summary
Edwin needs every resource at his disposal to escape Hell and the only thing he can count on is himself.
Every part of himself.
He grows used to using his past bodies as tools to escape, as less than human, as his own form as a means to an end. Escaping Hell doesn't mean escaping those thoughts of being disposable, of his form as a utilitarian machine made to solve wrongs and always gain more knowledge and tools for when Hell inevitably comes knocking again.
Charles, and his warmth of spirit, deserves more than the wretch Edwin has become.

Summary
Charles knows it isn’t possible—incorporeal disposition and all—but Charles dove head first into Hell and managed to blow up a demon with a Molotov cocktail less than a year ago, so with that logic it could very well be possible that Charles’ long dead heart starts to beat again. It certainly feels like it is racing out of his chest, slowly crawling up the column of his throat.
The wrongness of the haunted look in Edwin’s eyes swims in the forefront of his mind, and something in him already knows.
(Or: a new case leads them someplace far too familiar for Edwin, full of more than just ghosts.)
