Bella set it down self-consciously. “Maybe?”
“No fucking way! Promise I can be your maid of honor, right?”
Bella felt herself turn red. “It’s not—we’re not—”
She was mercifully cut off by Jessica’s laugh. “Joking! But you don’t know about the pen thing, do you?”
Bella shook her head.
“Someone decided to look up the brand of pen she uses. Each one costs over two hundred dollars. The brand is one of those European luxury stores that call their stuff ‘future heirlooms.’ So of course Alice has, like, one of each color.”
Bella stared in mute horror at the pen sitting on her desk. “She gave me two.”
Jessica’s cackle was so loud Bella was sure it could be heard from outside the building.

Alice is more than willing to help Bella become a vampire, and fulfill a few dreams along the way. She's in the middle of explaining the process when she's interrupted by James's phone call, luring Bella to her childhood home. Alice can clearly hear him on the other end (as it should've been in canon), and foils all of his well laid plans, as well as Edward's plan to keep Bella human. But there's a lot more lurking under the surface, and Alice starts to realize they never knew Bella at all.
this is a rewrite of my fic The Essence of You. It might end up fairly different, as I'm trying to dive deeper into their assorted issues.
