“Not according to the Company, I don’t.” Aventurine smiles and takes off his sunglasses. He reaches over and goes in for the kill, lifting the bottom of Ratio’s chin to meet his eyes. No one ever resists the eyes. “You have no idea how special you are—in that I was sent to retrieve you.”
Ratio says nothing. He doesn’t really move.
In which the IPC just can’t seem to convince Veritas Ratio to join the Intelligentsia Guild, so they deploy Aventurine to a tiny university city-state, where he must charm the good doctor into their fold.

Aventurine blinks with a sharp inhale. The air feels electrified in her struggling lungs. A shock wave surges through her body, overwhelming all her senses at once.
"I wanted it," yet the words fall easily off her numb tongue, too easily, like they mean nothing, like these aren't words, just something that sounds like them, just an illusion of words. Just a lie.
