He ducked into a tiny nook between the booths and pressed a finger to his ear as if that could block out the piano or the chatter.
“I don’t know,” she whispered, her voice small and panicked. “Some boy with pretty hair and sparkly brown eyes.”
Great. Exactly what he needed. Those were always the worst.

He hears the rustling of canvas and opens his eyes, turning to the door of his tent. Door, Joel scoffs; it's less a door and more a flap held closed by ties. At this particular moment, it's being secured in place by someone who is decidedly not the healer he'd called for.
"Where's the healer?" He grits.
"Busy, it's me or no one."
"Gods above, go get the fool from whatever bar table he's crawled under and tell him he's needed." Shifting Joel pants, his vision fraying black around the edges. Shit, he's lost more blood than he thought. "Git."
The kid doesn't budge. "He's treating the Lord, blisters or some such, he says to make do with me or make do on you're own."
IE: Joel is a fallen knight, fighting for gold instead of honor, and Tess is a squire, hiding from a storied past.

“Woah.” Ellie’s face is inches away from her window when Tess looks back, her gaze fixed on the deer. “They’re so big.”
“There’s a whole lot of things bigger than them,” Tess snorts.
“The only animals I’ve seen are birds and dogs.”
Right.
Joel rolls down his window and she’s hit with a blast of cold air to the face. She’s thankful, actually, as the roar of the wind fills the car, drowning out any of the kid’s attempts at further conversations. He rolls it back up once the sun has started to set, the insects beginning their evening songs.

Exasperated Bill gestures more aggressively, "I'm lettin' you go, so git."
"Now look here, can't we just be civil. First, name's Frank-"
"Well, you listen here, Frank. If'n I feed you, then every other layabout you talk to 'bout it, is gonna come round here lookin' for a free meal, an' I ain't no charity."

“We don’t –” Joel cuts himself off, presses the heels of his hands to his eyes, and Tommy freezes. There’s more coming out of his brother’s mouth now, something about selling the house and a college fund for the baby and Mae’s bonus but –
All Tommy can see is the dark green watch band wrapped around his brother’s wrist, and it punches the air from his lungs.
“Why are you wearin’ that?” He asks, his voice too loud in his ears, the words reverberating off the cabinets around them. “The watch, his watch, why the fuck are you wearin’ that?”

Joel’s home early.
Halfway between the front door and the stairs and in full view of the kitchen, Ellie freezes. “Fuck,” she mutters, low. “Yeah,” she says, loud enough to carry.
She has no choice but to stay hunched over herself like Quasimodo from that movie — it’s suspicious as fuck, but she manages to manoeuvre her arm to mostly obscure the squirming of the tell-tale bulge under her hoodie.
(Ellie and Joel have settled in Jackson. While Ellie goes to school and, Joel hopes, makes some friends her own age, he tries to keep their house from tumbling down around them. Ellie does befriend some Jackson locals, and tries to sneak them into her room — without Joel noticing that they’ve all got four legs.)

Cassian stumbles to the kitchen, sure that the souls living three stories below them can hear him wheezing. Don’t wake Bix up–go get water. He can’t see well enough to avoid the chair in his path. His foot gets caught in the legs and the next thing he knows is the floor. But the coughs aren’t done with him yet.
Another two minutes leave him propped up on shaky arms, gasping for breath and dry heaving.
He wonders blearily if he is dying.

“I find they are not as exaggerated as one might think,” Thrawn replied. “Especially with the promise of your discretion.”She considered him. He was asking for a black-market piece without even a hint of subtlety, and that meant he was either assured of her compliance or was laying a careful trap. Perhaps both.
“And if I were to have discretion?” she asked.He paused, his gaze sweeping over her, a silent, meticulous inventory that summarized and neatly footnoted her before she could bristle at the implied assessment. A flicker of satisfied intellectual curiosity softened the hard line of his mouth. “I am confident,” he said, “that we will find much to discuss.”

Dr. Johnson was found dead in his chambers three days after this.
In which Tess lives and makes her way to Jackson, and everyone has to learn to live with how cordyceps evolves beyond what it's been before.
