His friends made their way toward him, each taking up different spots beside him. Jess stood to his right, Zach on his left. Tony hopped the fence, coming to stand in front of Zach, leaning heavily against it. As the others took their spots, Clay looked around.
These people had been through hell, and he’d been there. For every single thing. For Jess, for Alex, for Tyler. He’d given his soul to these people. He knew they all trusted him with their lives, despite being entirely too unstable to probably healthily handle the stress. And he knew they all loved him. Maybe that’s why his mouth opens before he really realises it has, why he speaks softly, almost imperceptibly, before he thinks about it.
