“Hen, Chim, Ravi?” Buck says, finger on the talk button, “Can you hear me?”
Nothing. No one can hear him, but it's dark and hard to breathe, and Buck doesn’t want to die alone, so he keeps talking.
“Okay,” He says, “You guys probably can’t hear me, and I’m probably going to die down here, but I love you guys. I need you to know that. And I know that I’ve been distant lately, I should have been there. As your teammate, as your friend, not as a medicare grief counselor”
He takes a second, “And if you're listening, could you take a message to Eddie? Tell him this isn’t his fault. I know he’ll think it is, and it isn’t – he’s always too hard on himself, you have to tell him it’s okay. He tries harder than anyone I know.”
Buck lets go of the button, and stares up at the ceiling. At the beam. Tries to trick himself into thinking that it's a gleam of light, that the radio is going to crackle, and Eddie is going say, “Buck, you can tell me yourself,” and maybe even ask, “Is that really all you have to tell me?”
