There is a krayt dragon that lurks within Anakin's skin, and time and time again it demands attention. It demands to be seen and touched and loved in ways that it should not.
His palms itch with the urge to touch. To feel skin against his skin in a way that isn’t meant to hurt. He’s always getting hurt now, whether it’s normal wear and tear in battles or if he’s going toe to toe with Ventress again and gets a kick to the face. Anakin just wants touch that doesn’t hurt.

Rex notices things. That’s his job.
He notices the way that the general will lurk outside of the medbay, like a puppy kicked out of the dining hall, until the commander comes out. He notices the way that the general’s hands reach out, as if to touch and skim along whatever body part was hurt on his apprentice, only to retract at something she tells him.

Summary
Darth Vader hands Purge Commander CC-2224 a toddler and tells him to keep it safe. Cody takes Vader at his word and absconds with the kid, and spends the next two decades keeping Luke safe. His mission involves diapers, shoelaces, parent-teacher conferences, playdates, neighborhood cookouts, homework, teenage drama, and, possibly, rebellion against the Empire. Good soldiers follow orders, and CC-2224 is the best soldier the Empire has. Vader might just end up regretting telling him to keep his son safe.

That small part of Cody that is still afraid and broken keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop and the blackhole within him to consume him. Cody keeps waiting to wake up and find that this all has been a dream. He tightens his hold and he fights, reminds himself that this is all real. It won't be an easy road, there will still be challenges and fights ahead, but at least...at least… The darkness grows ever stronger. The light fights to stay strong. Cody fights to be whatever he must to be there for those he loves.
