Summary
Severus had long ago accepted that he lived life at rock bottom. Between home and school, he thought his daily norm couldn't get much worse; at least until he said that awful word in some desperate attempt at self preservation and learned he could dig himself even deeper.
Now it’s summer time. The sweltering heat chases him through his front door to find his mother- long dead- and his father in the wind.
After the funeral, left with nothing tying him to Cokesworth, Severus shoulders his meager belongings and catches the first train out of town. His hope is to travel. Find vagrant work to keep him occupied. Maybe catch his own death if he’s lucky. But instead he finds a girl, some oranges, and hand rolled cigars.

And as a final humiliation, the last face he saw was that of his tormentor and the eyes of the woman he loved and sacrificed everything for, to atone for his greatest mistake.
He said with difficulty, "Take it." Nothing mattered anymore. He would close his eyes forever and see nothing, no looks of betrayal, disappointment, reproach, or pity. Everything was over.

Severus Snape is not an optimist even on his best days. Today is not a good day.
Or also; Instead of dying peacefully and being tossed into a shoddy grave where future students come to vandalize, Severus finds himself flung through time to the beginning of his sixth year, and must deal with the consequences.
If it must be done, it must be done properly. Regretfully, he seems to be the best candidate.
