At one end of the bar, the salesman sat hunched over a crooked glass filled with something thick and black. The rim was chipped and the drink inside fizzed like a dying battery, slow and angry. He wasn’t large, but the energy around him was; frantic, dense, compressed like a trap sprung halfway— a shape made of string and fabric and something twisted too tight for too long. His hands twitched when he lifted the glass— thick, stubby fingers wrapped in fabric stained by things that never came out.
At the other side of the bar, near the broken lighting array where the floor sagged from water damage, the television drank in silence; tall, clean lines ruined by grime and wear. A body designed to be admired now bent around a half-crushed barstool, one boot hooked around the rung, the other stretched out like he owned the space beneath it. His coat was too pristine for this place, but it dragged in the filth anyway.
Neither spoke, neither looked at each other, but they were there at the same time, and the space between them was already shrinking.
