    Every time Helen speaks to Madeline it’s like she’s playing a tricky game. Like minesweeper, where she can’t step in the wrong place or it’ll explode. She almost wants to indulge Madeline in a match. She almost wants to hit her in the eye with a tennis ball, because her coach won’t be there and she can say it was just an accident. She almost wants to ditch her engagement dinner and her low expectations, for a good, low-stakes rally.

    And anyways, Helen prefers listening to Madeline grunt while hitting a ball than she does hearing Ernest grunt as he comes.
