Her eyes hardened. “There is no going back, Colin.” She folded her arms across her chest. “I never asked you to court me-”
“I know, I-”
“I have not finished!”
Colin gaped at her. Pen could be sharp in her witticisms, and he now knew she could be vindictive and cold when wounded. But he’d never seen her speak with such self-possession before. He bowed his head apologetically and gestured for her to continue.

An alternative S3 based on the synopsis. Aimed to have it completed before S3 was released but took too long. It was fully plotted but only half-written when the show was released, so occasional influence from the show has crept in but I try to minimise this. Probably now a bit of 'fix fic' (sort of) for those who wanted it to take longer to rebuild their relationship, more Colin perspective, a different placing of the Whistledown reveal, and some Colin and Pen against the world! :-)

Summary
Colin leaves a night out with his brother confused, displeased- Other. To take a mistress- what could possibly be the appeal? How could he even think to stay there a moment longer, when the very thought made him sick?
But as he walks home and reminisces, thinks of his wife and the respect he has for her, he remembers. Remembers that night in the carriage.
And recalls her, Penelope, the love of his life, fresh from reaching her pinnacle at his hand, staring at the clean palm he outstretched to her with eyes wide as a lamb's, asking him But won't your family see me?
