Summary
“You have a benefactor,” the Reverend Mother said without preamble.
“A London patron. Name undisclosed. They’ve arranged for you to travel to the city for the upcoming Season.” She paused, watching Marie closely. “It appears... someone wishes for you to make your debut.”
Marie’s breath caught in her throat. “There must be some mistake.”
“There isn’t.” The Reverend Mother tapped the envelope once, then slid it across the desk.
Marie stared. “Why?”
The Reverend Mother gave her the closest thing to kindness Marie had ever seen from her. “Perhaps they see something in you. Or perhaps they see what they can make of you.”

Summary
The tension is thick as the two walk side by side toward the building’s elevator. “There’s one more thing,” Their manager speaks up—voice clipped, motherly persona gone. “We’ve been in contact with Victoria Neuman.”
Jordan blinks. “Why?”
“She’s proposing a joint appearance. Maybe a red carpet, maybe a charity event. Something clean. Something soft. Her client’s image is pristine, and yours—” she gestures vaguely, “—needs a little polish.”
Jordan’s stomach flips.
“What exactly are you trying to do and who is this client,” they ask, voice low.
“Nothing for you to trouble yourself with,” their manager cuts in. “Not yet. This is business and I can’t have you ruining this before it even starts, so we’ll handle the logistics. You just show up and smile.”

Summary
When Marie's mysterious benefactor intervenes to prevent her expulsion and secure her place in the School of Crimefighting, Jordan sees her as a threat, albeit a distractingly beautiful one. They're not sure how they go from seeing her as the competition to irrevocably head over heels, but it probably has something to do with her smile.
Or, Luke doesn't kill Brink (yet), and Jordan and Marie have time to fall in love.
