Summary
Looking at an old map of Beleriand, you may feel like Maglor ruled the tiny strip of land between the Little and the Greater Gelion – that would be the one labelled as “Maglor’s gap”, stuck between Himring and Thargelion; but in those times the Exiles held the Siege, encircling the Thangorodrim, and Maglor ruled the eastern link of the choking chain, from Lothlann to the northernmost foothills of the Ered Luin. I meant to ride as far north as I could, to where the Ered Luin almost met the great, red mountain range that was Morgoth’s stony kingdom.
We are not there yet. We are still leaving Himring, riding down the stony path with goat herds flanking us.

One evening, Nines Rodriguez finds himself a captive of the Society of Leopold, alongside Prince goddamn LaCroix. Despite their sects’ fractious history, the two must join forces against enemies both old and new; all while trying to keep the Kindred of LA from tearing each other apart in the process.
Unlikely deals are struck, arguments escalated, and lethal debts come to collect. A true master has played the entire game before the first move, but someone has upturned the board completely.
At least no one ever claims the Free States are boring.

“Tell you what.” Jack fishes a cigarette box out of his vest pocket, plucks a cigarette from it, and puts it between his no-longer-smiling lips without lighting it. “How’s about we play one more joke tonight?”
Torpor is lapping at the edges of LaCroix’s consciousness, an ocean of tar. He continues to peer at Jack and thinks about paleontologists prying out black-stained bones.
Jack’s hand once again delves back into his pockets. “If you can haul your ass to the curb,” he says, “I’ll hail you a cab.”
Sebastian LaCroix survives the first night of Anarch reclamation of Los Angeles through a miracle. Every other night is up to him.
