    No, it was no longer 1832; there were his walnut bookshelves, there was the mantel clock with two turtle doves, a wedding present from Ève’s grandfather. And yet, here was Enjolras, sitting across from him on the sopha. Combeferre could not tear his eyes away from him. It seemed possible that if he blinked too hard he might disappear, like an apparition. It was the same face that had haunted him for so many years—the same full lips, the same high forehead, the same blue eyes.
    But no ghostly presence could explain the wear of ten years on his features, for in Combeferre’s mind, he had remained twenty-six.

     

    Ten years after the barricades, Enjolras and Combeferre reconcile with the past.
