Summary
Kawahira dresses his girls in white like the sacrificial virgins they are. It is not practical in the wilderness, but dirt smears their dresses like the world tends to stain girls anyway, and they are perfect. They will always be perfect, even if no one else would say so.
He has them for eight years and then he has to leave them. There is a relief to it, sometimes. For a moment, he can leave them behind, his collective of ghosts, his flock of girls. He has only one at a time, but it often feels like he carries every single one on his back, into eternity. It gets a little heavier with each dead girl he carries, each baby a boulder in his arms.
Luce is heavy, too, when he carries her into the Village of Sky. A dead weight, tired and grumpy and not at all happy he will leave her here. He can see it in her eyes.
