    Summary

Aventurine leaned against the railing of his balcony, pulled his lighter out, and—

The garden was empty. Stems swayed softly in the wind, leaves rustling, though the sliding door never opened, and no water ever poured into the can.

    Strange.

One warm summer evening, Dr. Ratio, his hot neighbor with a passion for gardening, doesn't show up to tend to his flowers. Or the next, or the one after that.
Aventurine, curious about what would keep such a dedicated man from his hobby, goes investigate.

What follows is a tale of broken routines and the joy (and sexual frustration) those changes will bring.

“Math?” And a published academic journal, at that?

“Yes.” Ratio returns the book to his bag, carrying on, but Aventurine’s stuck on the fact that this is apparently what he does in his free time outside of composing music.

“…I thought you were a pianist.”

    “I am a pianist.”

“But– math?” Even Aventurine doesn’t spend that much time thinking about math, and he spends twelve hours a day staring at financial models.

“Does it not occur to you that it's possible to have more than one interest?”

Aventurine lives the same week on repeat: eighty hours of his soul-sucking high finance job, then two nights of dancing off the stress to the beat of his favorite anonymous DJ. His move into a luxury apartment building brings him next door to Ratio, an esteemed classical composer with a love for piano. Eager to make a good impression, Aventurine keeps his clubbing habit under wraps — but he’s not the only one hiding secrets under strobe lights.
