Shaking her head to clear it, Penelope locks eyes with Henry. "If you want to survive, we need to hide, Henry. Do you understand?"
Something whizzes past her head and it's hot and loud and there's a ringing that's digging into her brain like a fire poker and—
"Oh my god, did you just shoot at me?"
She brings a ginger hand up to her right ear. It comes away dry. She levels a look at the man in front of her. "And miss?"
His hands are shaking, face white as a sheet. He looks like he might be sick, this bastard, this coward, and time is running out if they're ever going to survive this.
But maybe Penelope, some selfish, horrible part of her, wants him to know how it feels to be left for dead, wants him to feel the same helplessness his past wives did. Never a consequence for him, never a lesson learned. As if they were disposable, replaceable. As if she wasn't even a person at all.
