Problem is lines get blurred very quickly between vessel, memory, grief and Lucifer's presence. Letting go can be very hard. If things don't work as Sam imagined, well that is a risk one takes when dealing with Lucifer.

After Lucifer (Jessifer) reveals himself to Sam and tells him, "It had to be you," Sam rushes to prove him wrong, before the devil can show up and claim his vessel. It doesn't help that Sam is alone, broken up from his brother and having had an absolutely harrowing day with some hunters that blame him for starting the apocalypse. It's fine, he does too.
