Castiel remembers this most from his time searching for the human in Hell. For a long time he thought it was Michael's spirit, somehow within his true vessel, that drew Castiel near. That it was no ape, but an angel whose aura was powerful enough to measure up to his own one of Angelic Grace.
But Castiel met his archangel brothers, knowing any drop of that spirit would be undeniable and immediately recognisable. It felt nothing like Dean's.
Dean Winchester's soul is beautiful, and that is what saved him.
Not Michael's spirit, not some other, external trail from an angel.
