He heard her shift in the stall next to him. “My turn.” She took a moment to think, the silence settling over the bathroom. “Have you… Ever been in love?”
Steve felt himself freeze at the question. Instances of friendly pushes against his shoulder and a sink basin turning red with bloody knuckles. Of an old bandana, a last call.
“Twice,” He muttered. “Nancy Wheeler. First semester, junior year.”
“She’s such a priss!” Steve could hear Robin’s eyes rolling from the stall over. “Wait- you said twice? Who’s the other?”
Steve swallowed. “A friend from middle school.”
“Are you still in love with her?” She asked softly. Steve chewed at the inside of his cheek.
“He died when we were thirteen.” He whispered, feeling the sting of tears prick against his eyes, aggravating the cut on his cheekbone.
