Summary
Will spotted a strange rock on the grass, just a few feet away from him. It glowed in currents of misty red smokes, so beautiful and inviting. Yet, no one seemed to notice its presence. No one else but him.
The reddish glow on the rock circulated his wrist before the plasma-like content inside it burst open the shell and shot through the air, engulfing his whole body.

Before Will could come out to his mother, by the dumb time-traveling science of a seemingly exotic rock, he stumbled in the distant past whereby Hawkins was still a peaceful, quiet town. Whereby chaos just began to stir. Whereby Henry Creel was just another high school freshman who held only a few secrets short of his odd staring problem and his weird obsession with a certain AV kid.

"Oh god, oh god, we've gotta get you to the hospital,” Mike panics. He pulls away and studies Will for a moment before barreling on. “Holy shit, one second you were just standing there and the next your eyes were rolling back and you were unconscious for a whole seven seconds-”
Maybe Will really did bite the dust in dimension x and this is the afterlife. He knows where they say boys like him end up after death.
But if hell was a baby-faced Mike Wheeler, still looking at him like he'd hung the stars, then maybe an eternity here wouldn't be so bad.
In which Will's connection to the hive mind has consequences in the final battle, sending him back in time to November 6th 1983.
It's just like Back to the Future, if Marty McFly was a twelve year old with a bowl cut trying to save the world.

Summary
A sharp crack tears through the air. Mike flinches back, staring down at Will's lifeless body. He gets one last look before the ground is giving way beneath them, and all at once, they’re falling.
A shrill cry tears from Mike’s throat as he finds himself flailing through the open sky. A sharp crack of lightning shutters in the distance. Will's limp corpse contorts, dropping faster than he can. He’s screaming, unimaginable terror ripping through his body. He writhes, reaching for Will, crying the boy's name.
He’s falling, plummeting through a destabilized upside down and there's nothing he can do to stop it. He’s going to die.
Mike reaches out, eyes squeezed close. He tears the watch from Will's wrist, seconds before colliding with the Exotic Matter.

OR
Colliding with Exotic matter as the Upside Down collapses in on itself sends Mike hurtling through time. He’s given the chance to save Will before any of this starts.
But he can’t seem to get it right. Reliving moments throughout the years, helpless to warn Will. He just wants to keep him safe. Why can’t he keep him safe?
He’ll do this again and again until he gets it right. He won’t lose him again.

There is silence.
Then, Will laughs, his startled features puffing out something light and airy as his face stretches into a grin, one brow lifting with interest.
“Yeah, so am I.”
Or
Mike gets injured, and because anything can happen in Hawkins, gets sent on a confusing time travel journey that teaches him a few things about himself and the relationships that matter most to him.
