    Summary

They have words for ‘certain,’ ‘speculation,’ ‘hope.’ They hardly ever use them. Verb tenses (indicated with sound tags, like English does with ‘ing’ or ‘ed’) mark off whether a thing didn’t happen, possibly happened, probably happened, was personally witnessed to have happened, reliably documented to have happened, logically must have happened, or is hoped to have happened. Future tense is not as elaborate, since none of that has happened. Although there are a fucking boatload of past tenses, at least it is consistent. No irregular verbs at all.

This afternoon was all structural comparisons with Arcee. She says a sentence in English, then again in Cybertronix while I write it down. Then she checks the spelling. Then we would go through and gloss word by word.

    It rained recently.
{Short term but undetermined time unit—past event} {Rain—certainty, logically must have happened} (evidence is implied)

    It might rain later.
    {Short term but undetermined time unit—future event} {Rain-possibility} {event calculated at non-zero}

    The rain was cold.
    {Short term but unspecified time unit—past event} {Rain-personally witnessed to have happened} {273.8 degrees kelvin}

    Summary

“The good news here,” Dr. Nomura said, “Is that we don’t have to rush the solution to any problems that arise. An immobile mech, the energon system depressurized and the lower lines drained—the patient is not going to bleed out or go into shock. He is not using weapons. He is not going to sustain additional damage from the open systems. And there will be enough residual energon available to the protoform to keep that healthy under these conditions for…judging by the size, I would say two or three days. Plenty of time to deal with any unexpected emergencies.”

    Summary

Jazz is a small-time criminal broker. Against his better judgment, he agrees to fence a stolen tactical computer, but instead of a fancy mod, that ‘computer’ turns out to be a beautiful, amnesiac Praxian.

Jazz may be a criminal, but he’s got limits, and mecha trafficking is one of them. He frees the captive Praxian and embarks on a quest to help the mech regain his memory.

It won’t be easy. The mech’s kidnappers aren’t happy their prize was stolen, and looming overhead is the spectre of whoever commissioned that tactical computer, and their unknown intentions for its bearer.

Interesting worldbuilding and lovely characterization alreadyyyy

Jazz being created as a military construction thing with a poor vocalizer, so he saved and saved until he could afford a good one capable of singing 🥺

“Snuffed” also refers to getting killed, in reference to snuffing a spark. Interesting
“ The chromatophores covering Jazz’s plating darken to the color of shadow. His parastructure, the non-essential outer armor and bits related to his alt-mode, flows through a series of microtransformations that alter his recognizable outline from stocky construction frame into something sharper and sleeker. Jazz reaches into his subspace, retrieves his visor, and clicks the optical band into its mounts. It flickers to life after running diagnostics, casting a golden glow across the alley.”
“ The citystate of Polyhex is sunk into a three-pronged valley surrounded by spires and plateaus. Once its residents ran out of flat ground, their only choice was to build up, and the Polyhexians have been turning their city into a vertical labyrinth ever since, layer upon layer of overpasses, skyways, balconies and elevated plazas. In Polyhex, the best, most direct routes don’t need wheels. The Sideways Roads are open to anybot as long as they’re willing to take a brisk climb–assuming, of course, they have no fear of heights and a good grappler as backup if they crash through shoddy construction work (Jazz has both; frame-original even!).”

    Oooooh👀

“ mechanometers” I like this adjustment. This writer uses good vocabulary that makes sense

“ Polyhexians, accustomed to public spaces that pack them together like cubes in a crate, keep their fields flattened close to their plating. When Ruse reaches out with his field in the Polyhexian greeting, Jazz temporarily turns down his field dampener and extends his own field so they brush politely together. Ugh, Ruse’s field feels slimy, like touching the slugs on Raya IV–but not the nastiest field Jazz’s ever tasted, so Meister keeps his expressionless attitude.”

Gah! There are too many cool details and worldbuilding tips!

Primus’ blood” oh that’s a new one. ((Like I was saying! Cool words!))

This writer’s really good at action too

“ Flicking solvent in his direction, Jazz says, “Gimme your comm code,” receiving a response ping near-instantly. Tracer must have crazy processing speed.”
    Hmmmmmm

“ Mecha who can’t follow the Sideways Roads will hire a courier who’ll make the trip for them. Mostly, couriers are used for express deliveries and (more) smuggling. It’s dangerous but well-paid work, and it won’t draw too much attention. Jazz grins, checks his dim reflection in the stairway’s metal wall, and engages his new programming.”

Oooh, the no safety systems in the TacNet is interesting

“ Tracer exvents a shivery sort of whistle–he goes nonverbal when he’s stressed, Jazz makes a note–” :(

    {Reminder: Conversation partners expect a response in-kind and may become hostile if they believe you are intentionally snubbing them. If your systems are too strained to reply using voice or text, try apologizing later.}
    Awwww

Very interesting link - Enforcers work for and enforce the will of Primus (and focus on crimes against him), so Prowl is kinda religious(?)

    XD
I love the idea that Prowl sleeps deep, sleeps hard (features of the TacNet), and loves his beauty sleep.

    Summary

New ops agents always come with a few quirks. Jazz knows how to manage the usual bad habits (arson, stealing, the urge to stab when surprised...).

Prowl’s adjustment period is less straightforward.

Back at it again with a sequellll

    Prowl no

“Chief Medic Ratchet made a sound of inordinate rage. “What idiots deliberately designed a frame to have a processor glitch?!?”

Prowl fared poorly at identifying rhetorical questions. It was better to answer and look foolish than to not answer and offend mecha, so he replied, “Eliminating the glitch reduced my tactical system’s performance by 65 percent, rendering the design useless. As I am, I outperform any other integrated tactical computer by considerable margins.” “
    :(

‘Being himself has never made a good first impression’
    :(((

“If Prowl rose as high in the Autobot ranks as Jazz expected, eventually he’d need a whole security team, but for now one good frameguard with the right medical training would do the job. Jazz had a few potentials lined up, just needed to test which one jived with Prowl best.”
👀Sideswipe and Sunstreaker? (For his future security)

Smokescreen being an army therapist kinda! :D

Oh this is cool! Technical details and descriptions on how to deal with a crash!

“This was why fieldwork was more fun. When you blew up your enemies’ stuff, they had to write 75% more reports than you.”
    XD
That’s the real weapon in war - paperwork.

“Jazz kept a corner of his meta free for plotting how he’d show Soundwave that rummaging around in Jazz’s home territory made Jazz very unhappy. Ten vorn ain’t too long for revenge. For now, Jazz can light a few fires that will leave Soundwave chasing his own aft.”

“The medics kept Prowl under for another two dark-cycles. That left Jazz stuck in neutral gear, and a Jazz with nothing to do was a Jazz chewing the walls, floors and furniture. He burned rubber at the track till his axles creaked, then he ripped through so many sparring partners that Ironhide threw him out of the ring and told him to get his helm straight again.”
    🥺

    More cool praxian music worldbuilding

“Color bloomed and disappeared on his plating, darkening and lightening, while he considered who he was wearing tonight.”
    Interesting worldbuilding!

“For a mechanism with my processor, there is no idea more dangerous than ‘I know best.’”
    Oooh

Ooh! In this scenario it seems Prowl is property, an indentured servant. With the cost of his creation being skyhigh, and with an interest so exponential he’ll be in debt when he dies despite good wages.
Previously belonged to the police force, now to an Autobot tactical officer.

Interesting worldbuilding around Praxians, that normal mechs are loud to them
This is a good view of “underdog Prowl”, something I haven’t seen much of before 👀

“ Prowl of Petrex” I thought he was from Praxus. Is that a city within?

Curious that the species are referred to as “mechanisms” instead of “mechs.” It kinda fits?

“Optimus would glitch his processors when Jazz told him about Prowl. Then Prime would give Prowl to Jazz, no questions asked, and go off to sadly and nobly contemplate the wrongs of society, before doing something crazy like trying to outlaw construction debt via Primal Edict. Ultra Magnus would have a fit if he had to rewrite the legal code again.”
    *wheeze*

    “Professional sneak” lol
