Summary
And she knows it’s all for naught; that one day soon she’ll reach for a spoon in the kitchen without thinking or grab her cream from the vanity without needing to look and she’ll miss, instead, these moments where everything is new.
But it’s late – or early – and the house is quiet and so she gives herself permission to want for what once was – just for a minute. Just while there’s no one awake to catch her mooning over time gone by.
OR Carla, the middle of the night at number 6, and some quiet reflection.

Summary
Carla's arms were crossed, and she looked far too glamourous to be sitting on a plastic chair in an A&E waiting room, with her manicured nails and calf length leather boots. "So... I'm your emergency contact?"
"I had to put someone, and it turns out, you're basically the only adult I know who doesn't work where I work, and that was so depressing that I didn't want to tell you." Lisa said begrudgingly. "That's just another fun side effect of my wife dying. You suddenly don't have an emergency contact."

Summary
“So, you want one then?” Lisa asks, proffering the bag she’s had stashed under the table, "I was hiding them from Ryan and Betsy."
“Nah, wouldn’t want to deprive you, we both know how much that pretty mouth likes to be kept occupied,” Carla hums, running her thumb over Lisa’s bottom lip before pressing the candy cane back between them.
Lisa cocks her head, eyelashes fluttering as she stares up at her. “Yeah?” She says breathily, not missing a beat, “I can think of plenty of other ways you could keep it occupied.”
(Or: It's Carla's first day back at work after christmas, and Lisa's feeling especially needy.)

Summary
“Such a gentleman- woman- gentlewoman,” Carla fumbled the first time.
“It’s fine,” Swain replied, deep down unsure which one was more fine than the other.
Growing up, Lisa was a bit of a tomboy who resisted and rejected dresses in favour of a t-shirt, hoodie and jeans – but that was normal for anyone who favoured practicality above looks. Right?
She was a daughter, lesbian, constable, girlfriend, partner, detective, mother, wife and widow. And yet, he had always wanted to be a gentleman, too.
