Summary
Juliet Bashir was hoping to do some actual good at the posting she'd chosen on Deep Space Nine. That was all she really wanted after everything she'd been through. She wasn't really expecting to be dragged into the a not so cold war, a spy plot worthy of the holo-programs she played as a teenager, and what some people might call an ill advised friendship with the only Cardassian on the station. It doesn't hurt that she's a wildly interesting older woman with a killer smile and ice blue eyes. Juliet is pretty sure that this might be a wildly bad idea, but she's going to have fun while it lasts.

But then, the transporter grated again into motion, a terrible whine leaving it as a beam of light slowly consolidating into a heartrendingly familiar form. Kirk stared, half agony and half hope, hardly daring to imagine it was possible. The beam wavered, then settled, and there he suddenly was — somewhat ruffled, yes, but upright and breathing.
The most beautiful creature that Kirk could imagine — Spock, alive! — stood at attention on the transporter pad, and, overcome, Kirk could do nothing else but take him by the arms and kiss him. It was sheer animal instinct, urging him to grasp what once was thought lost and draw it close.

When a transporter malfunction leads Kirk to believe that Spock has died, he has an entirely proportionate response to the revelation that he hasn't. Spock, fortunately, has no objections.
