“Cruel. Merciless. Terrible, yes.” Each word seems to sting in her gut, inflame it. Conjure more images of muscled arms and blunt steel and splitting skin and sweat. She remembers the shape of Adar pinned beneath his boot, but her imagination offers someone else in his place: golden-haired and trembling and— “But you know this is the price of power, Galadriel. Sometimes we have no choice.”
“I know.” Her breath goes hobbled by the greedy, sickening warmth in her middle. “But you aren’t like that. To me. Ever.”
