Pepper Potts' personal assistant got swept up into the dynamics of the Avenger's team. It's easy enough to do that. They're a charismatic group, and it doesn't exactly feel terrible to be part of something that makes a difference in the world. Particularly when you're no one, coming from nothing, and of little relevance otherwise.
On the other hand, Michelle Sanchez used to be able to sleep at night.

Peter got a Stark phone when he was ten. Adrian took him to a big store with lots of TV screens that all played the same video of Tony Stark declaring to the world that he was Iron Man. They ducked behind the microwaves, both of them giggling as Adrian stuffed the phone under Peter’s sweater.
They walked right out the door without tripping the alarm, and Adrian bought him ice cream to celebrate.

Trying to hold onto his fight, Peter shoots back, “Yeah? And what’s that?”
“To have nothing, after being able to believe you could have everything.”
The streets are dirty, crowded, and the jagged bumps in the asphalt are hardly comfortable to sleep on. They’re home, though.
Peter is just about finished with New York City. It’s gotten impossibly harder to find even a scrap of food, and what little belongings he does have are unlikely to keep him alive through the winter. And the memories. God, the painful memories here.
So he saves up. Makes a plan to get out of there.
Then, somehow, he accidentally saves Tony fucking Stark from a gang of eight mercenaries, and the majestic plan disintegrates into ash.
The worst part about it, he knows, isn’t even that he met Tony. It’s that Tony met him.
