Summary
The merchant, Gnaeus, who had sold Marcus this property, had spoken of a solid main building, of well-kept pens and fertile soil, all newly abandoned by deceitful tenants and only cheap because he was tired of the whole business and wanted the land off his hands for good. He had talked of neighbours and a village nearby with opportunities of trade, but he had entirely failed to mention that the house lay deep in tribal country.

Summary
The warmth in Esca’s chest, its suddenness, is a sign of much deeper feelings that he may not be ready to acknowledge. Rome has rules that govern the interactions of masters and slaves, as it has those that govern the affairs between patrons and their freedman clients, but as of now, he and Marcus do not fit neatly between any of these lines. Marcus does not strike Esca as one who deals well with blurred lines, and Esca himself no longer knows how to handle warmth.

Summary
Esca looks down at his bare right ankle, which is warm to the touch. A name is displayed there, permanently, sunken into his skin for all time, written in a tight, jagged handwriting:
Marcus Aquila

Summary
Having sex with Keith in order to secure an alliance with an alien species wasn't how Lance expected to lose his virginity, but it wasn't the worst way for it to go.
(Until afterwards, of course, when it all goes wrong and Keith won't speak to him. Not that Lance has any idea why. Or why it bothers him so much.)
