Etho caught him instantly, letting Joel curl into his hoodie like a tired toddler trying so hard not to cry.
“I gotcha,” Etho murmured. “You’re okay. You’re safe. It’s okay to feel fuzzy. Wanna come down all the way with me?”
Joel nodded into his shoulder.
Doc stood and gave a quiet thumbs-up. “I’ll stay with Tango and Zooma. You two do what you need.”
Tango waved. “I made Joel a pillow fort!”
Zooma clapped sleepily from inside it, paci still in, slime charm wiggling.

Joel hiccupped. “I was trying to be big.”
“I know. And you’re allowed to try. But it’s also okay to stop trying. Especially when it hurts.”
He hesitated.
Joel didn’t respond, just clutched the edge of the blanket tighter.
“Can I sit with you?” Etho asked.
Joel nodded.
Etho climbed up carefully and let Joel curl into his side. Joel trembled for a moment, but then burrowed closer, hiding his face in Etho’s hoodie.
“You’re not a joke,” Etho said softly. “You’re Joel. And you won. And even if you hadn’t, you’d still be amazing. Because none of that stuff makes you more or less worthy of being little or needing care. Tough guys fall too.”
