Harry has never particularly worried about her future. The Dursleys were horrible, it was true, and her parents were dead, but since she was very small she had understood that there were two people in the world who she would meet, and then they would be her family.
The words killed in action make her think that maybe there aren’t people waiting for her. Her stomach flips when Agent Coulson says it. He explains that they had died within a week of one another, which is sad almost beyond words.
Even if they are, somehow, alive, both would be well into their eighties. Even if she finds them, very, very soon, she will spend most of her life alone. It makes her - angry, almost, and inexplicably. As if Steven Grant Rogers and James Buchanan Barnes have broken a promise, as if they meant to die and leave her all alone.
Harry is twenty-one years old when Steve Rogers is pulled from the ice.
Steve might say that it is their choices that define who they are. Harry knows, she knows what her choices say about her. She knows exactly who she is and what she has done.
