Summary
In the midst of the night a man, a boy really, stands before the blazing manor. His long black hair is piled at the side of his head in a bun with pink silk ribbons and a golden hairpin weaved within. His threadbare and loosely tied hemp robes are covered by a silk beizi flowing in the wind revealing a small newborn, no older than a few weeks, within his arms.
The air is filled with a nauseating, arcid sweetness. The boy revels in it, drinking in the scent as though it were water. He’s only jolted from his daze when the newborn in his arms begins to fuss, sneezing from the smoke.
“Yuan’er… You’re a’ni- your gege is here. I’ll protect you.” The boy begins to move. He has to leave, get far away from this wretched city and bring himself to the meeting place.
