She knew she should have called for help; the responsible thing would be to flag down Raven Leader and let her bandage it. But in that moment, feeling that sting, Hilda couldn’t do it.
Because for one long moment, it was all she could feel. That sharp pain drowned out everything else, a single focal point against which all of her horrible thoughts blurred away. She didn’t have to worry about her mum or her grounding or anything else, lost in that feeling; in a horrible sort of way, the pain brought relief.
Feeling increasingly alone, and convinced her mum wants a better daughter, Hilda turns to desperate measures to cope.
