Spider breathes in neutrality, the symbiote in him hesitant to take more of either world
Aka the RDA instill fear in the mycelium symbiote that keeps spider alive, by trying to rip it away from Spider and also test on Spider himself. Things obviously go sideways. He gets saved but....both are scared of breathing either worlds' air right now

Summary
Eight years after the Sky People were defeated at the battle of the Floating Mountains, Tonowari encounters a strange Sky Person child, Spider, under the care of the Omaticaya clan.
The more he learns about this child, the more horrified he becomes.
Tonowari was never one to allow any child to grow without a loving family. Spider is no exception, even if Tonowari must adopt him himself.
Now, if only Jake were to agree...

In the aftermath of the battle at Three Brothers Rocks, no one has time to check on Spider, and the last thing Spider wants is to be more of a burden than he already is. All he has to do is survive, as he always has.
