The afterlife is, in most religions, supposed to be peaceful. Whether in a sort of peaceful merging with everything that is, was, and will be, or simply going to a paradise, where earthly needs are met, or where there is simply no need for earthly needs to be met.
Soul Society would have disappointed a lot of people, as far as afterlives went.
