David Hollander gets in a car accident while Shane and Yuna are travelling. Ilya, newly traded to Ottawa, is the only one available.

And Ilya nearly chokes. The first name. His actual first name. Whispered like something intimate. Sacred. They’ve never called each other by their first name. Always Hollander. Always Rozanov. Ilya is so stunned he almost doesn’t process the next words, almost can’t translate them despite living in the States for almost four years now.

The smell of bacon wafts into his room as she steps out. Hints of waffles, eggs, and a strong pot of coffee mix with it, and Ilya sighs getting to his feet. He hears his stomach growling. He hears the sizzle of grease, the scrape of a spatula in a pan… a soft melodic humming…
Ilya has half a mind to follow his senses— and Svetlana— to the kitchen, but… practice. He pouts to no one and turns to drag his feet into the bathroom. A warm shower should help with the headache he now has anyway.

Shane watches helplessly as Ilya is sent headfirst into the boards, spine twisting, skates lifting off the ice as his body folds under the force. The sound of impact is thunderous and wrong - echoing - louder than the crowd, louder than the goal horn, louder than the pounding of his heart against his chest, as Ilya’s body finally crumples into the ice.
Ilya had no time to brace, Shane knows he had no time to brace because Shane had no time to brace.
And he’s not moving.
