"-tell me, Venti, what is your connection with Stormterror?"

Venti hummed. "Dvalin was lied to- corrupted by the lies of the Abyss Mage," he began. "In sorrow, he lived, crying tears of agony… I tried purifying him at first, but your… ah, earlier interruption did more harm than good. I had to resort to a more exhausting option as a result." He allowed his fake-vision to transform into Der Frühling, making sure that neither Aether nor Paimon could see it happen. He slid his fingers across the wood, smiling. "The Holy Lyre was the key to saving Dvalin- and Dvalin is a friend of mine. If you are here for my arrest, Honorary Knight, then may you first understand the lengths that I will go for the sake of freedom."

"Then help me understand," Aether whispered. "Help me understand your motives."

    Summary

Albedo blinks back tears he cannot shed. He still doesn't understand. "Did I fail?”

"Oh, my dear Albedo…” Master softly murmurs. “That is not what I meant. You didn't fail because my ultimate assignment is not one you can fail.”

Her hands, the very same hands that once shaped him from a formless clump of coagulated chalk, cradle his face.

"Live, my little chalk prince," Master pleads. "That's all I ever wanted from you.”

Albedo finally looks up at an impossibly sad face.

     "Live."

The corruption finally comes for Albedo. But instead of bringing about the homunculus' end, Albedo's friends and family join him on a desperate mission that involves the slumbering dragon Durin, Fatui Harbingers, and a revelation his heart may not be ready to accept.

[A fic about the lengths Albedo will go to protect Mondstadt and the lengths everyone else will go to protect him.]
