Summary
Shauna Shipman was not a boy.
Granted, her wardrobe was full of thrifted flannels and button ups from the men’s section, products of impulse shopping with Jackie.
And she wore men’s cologne, primarily in an effort to distinguish her fragrance from her girlfriend’s wide array of scents that she used generously.
She didn’t necessarily look like a girl either—sure, her features were feminine, and she often accessorized herself with elaborate ear piercings (thanks to a DIY piercing job Jackie begged to do after a late night out) but she sported a slickback of medium length that barely went past her ears, and her arms and shoulders were defined enough to make her overall figure ambiguous.
She didn’t even mean to look like this, really.
It was entirely circumstantial. Expected, even, considering how willing Shauna was to do whatever Jackie wanted.
What Shauna was not expecting was how much she liked it.

It was too much, too fast, too soon. PJ was just barely understanding that she didn’t like Brittany so much as she liked the 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢 of Brittany. She didn’t want to do the same thing to Hazel.
Hazel had finally gone back to being her friend. Her quirky, goofy, oddball friend who made bombs for fun and sat in seats with her legs sprawled out like a child playing on the floor.
She went back to being Hazel. And PJ didn’t want anything to jeopardize that.
“Guys, guys, guys—“ Hazel busted through the doors of the gym, scrambling over to the club with so much excitement PJ was a little worried she’d hurt herself. She was grinning like a complete idiot as she dropped her backpack on the ground and did a little jump. “I just got asked out!”
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵.
OR: A few weeks after the football massacre, things are finally back to normal between PJ and Hazel (after PJ avoiding talking about her feelings like the plague and Hazel finally giving up) and she's ready to leave the kiss and her complicated, totally platonic and not at all life-ruining feelings behind her.
That is, until Hazel suddenly gets a girlfriend. A girlfriend who, frankly, in PJ's opinion, is a total 𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩.
