He could feel the drag of sleep in his step, his muscles tense and aching, making it feel as though he was carrying more than himself. He had only had enough time between shifts to come back to the apartment and change then grab his lunch before walking Steve into town. He was thoroughly exhausted and right now he was certain the only thing keeping him awake enough to not drunkenly stumble was the sting of near freezing rain against his face."

There’s breath in his lungs and blood rushing through his body, he’s alive to tell the tale of the horrors behind Azzano and he’s fighting for his red white and blue flag with every ounce of strength he can muster.
He’s okay, he tells himself, desperation welling in his chest.

“And miss an evening with my best guy?” Bucky swings around to the other side of the sofa and reaches his hand out, the other pleasantly snapping away to the beat of the radio, “C’mon doll, you’re the best part of my day.”
“You say that every day.” Steve rolls his eyes, tilting his head away to hide the blush that’s already starting to blossom across his cheeks. Too late, Bucky’s already seen it, and he’s out for blood.

His voice is a mere whine against the languid silence. The walls in your apartment are crooked, the doorway is too small, and the windows are stretched so far up they’re practically bending into the ceiling. Nothing sits right, and Bucky looks like he’s suffocating, choking on his own shame. You can hear his throat closing around the apologies gasping for life, coughing them out as they tear through his teeth.
“You shouldn’t forgive me.”
