Summary
Vi has been stuck doing nothing but paperwork for about a week now, and she is roughly five minutes from beating her face into a bloody pulp against the pristine, scratchless surface of her glossy black desk. She knows that she has to serve out her punishment, under the explicit orders of her pissed-off captain, but, even now, she can’t help but feel that the precinct is focusing on the wrong thing– sure, she punched the perp that she had been chasing a few too many times, but all of that was after he had shoved an old woman right into traffic in an attempt to shake her off of his back. That woman had nearly died, Vi just barely able to grab her arm with a bruising grip to pull her out of the way of an oncoming garbage truck that was failing to slow down, even as its brakes screeched and squealed, so she feels like maybe the guy had earned a few extra hard knocks to the noggin.

When Vi first moved back to Zaun after several failed attempts to make something of herself, she knew that she would need some time to readjust to things– the last time she had been here, she and her sister had still been on perfectly good terms, though that has not been the case ever since. In a way, she is grateful to not have any other family left to let down besides her sister; the younger woman has been good thus far about avoiding her completely, so even as she trudges back into their old haunting grounds, Vi finds that she doesn’t have to face anyone’s disappointment in her abject and repeated failures that drove her back to the same cracked, hole-ridden streets of her childhood.

Summary
She looks down at fists that she can’t believe are her own, then wheezes, her body feeling unfamiliar, like it belongs to a stranger. Her hand wraps itself around her sister’s neck and her mind begs her to stop, because this is never what she has ever wanted any part of this to come to. She was supposed to protect the woman beneath her, that is what she has always tried to do, and this is not that. Vi feels sick to her stomach– she doesn’t know how everything in her life managed to fall apart so quickly, but she just wants time to freeze for a moment so she can pick up the broken, jagged pieces to find what is left that can be salvaged. She wants to cry, she wants to scream, but she keeps swinging, and she has no idea why or how to put her fists down.
