Summary
Shane tells himself, on the nights when one or both of them is traveling, on the nights when they can’t be together, that he is okay with Ilya doing what he needs to do. To keep his body active, his mind calm. To be able to love Shane without resentment.
He’s almost able to convince himself he believes it.
OR
Shane thinks they have an unspoken agreement for a one-sided open relationship (on Ilya's side). When Ilya suggests that Shane might want to sleep with other men, Shane panics. Sad boy antics ensue.

Rozanov poked a finger into Shane’s hip. Shane looked down, breath catching on a gasp at the sight of slowly fading handprint shaped red marks on his hips. Rozanov’s hands. Rozanov had held onto him so closely, fucked into him so hard, that he left marks on Shane’s skin.
Shane should have been pissed, but really, if he hadn’t just come three times, he’d be hard in an instant. Part of him wished Rozanov had held him even tighter, held him hard enough to bruise.

The thing about shame, Shane had learned, was that it tasted metallic. Like blood in your mouth after taking an elbow to the face, or the way your tongue felt after biting it to keep from screaming during a particularly brutal check. It coated everything: his morning coffee, the complimentary breakfast at the hotel, even the Seattle air that hit him when he stepped outside the terminal.
We are nothing, Hollander.
Three months. Rozanov hadn't answered a single text, a single call, not even the one Shane had sent at 2 AM after too little inhibition and too much loneliness, the one that just said please. Radio silence. Complete and total ghosting, like Sochi never happened, like his apartment never happened, like Shane giving himself to Rozanov in a way he'd never done with anyone meant absolutely nothing.
(Or, Shane decides to put a bandaid on a bullet hole and this is how it goes down.)

Summary
“I am serious, though, you are safe, yes? Drunk at hotel, sitting on balcony, crying over Montreal’s terrible loss?”
It makes sense that Ilya’s mind would go there first. Shane said he was outside. Based on past behavior, the hotel balcony is probably the only place Ilya would expect him to be. He feels a little giddy that he gets to shock him for once.
“I’m at a club, actually.” He has to bite back a self-satisfied smile as he speaks, “With the team. Safe.”
It's quiet for a few moments before Ilya deadpans,
“Very funny joke.”
(or: three days after the breakup with rose, shane gets drunk in boston. it spirals out from there.)
